Hi All,
A few people asked me for references/background to my mention that = sybase iq is in 4 of the top 10 DSS databases based on input volume.
The public document of this is here:
The section you are looking for is 'normalised databases'....
It's not easy to understand the report. Obviously, Winter Corp would = like you to buy the detailed report. (Fair enough too.)
The note says:
"Normalized Data Volume estimates of the total volume of data managed by = the DBMS in GB."
Which I read to mean the amount of source data that is being = managed....I could be wrong. It's just a footnote.=20
In any case, it can be seen from the report that IQ is well represented = in the top 10.....
It's just not widely known by people considering large DWs that IQ is = 'out there' and that it has much lower TCO than Oracle/NCR......
I am not saying any one of these three (or DB2/SQL Server) is the ONLY database for any specific problem. Each of these 5 have their own advantages/disadvantages/TCO amounts etc. =20
Companies find that they can make each of the five do what it is they = want it to do within the limits of the database/hardware etc.....=20
I just think that if companies are interested in producing the most cost effective results in the DW space for a reasonably large DW (.5TB source data and up) then IQ should be on the list to be considered because of = it's low TCO due to lower license fees and reduced hardware/DBA resource requirements.=20
This is especially true of dimensional models with large numbers of rows where IQ does particularly well.
Best Regards
