Hi Greg,
A business related question...great!!!!
My opinion.
The >>REAL<< business value in >>REAL<< time DWing is that the hardware and software vendor get to sell you more kit...period.
If a DW is to support the management decision making process and managers don't make 'big decisions' in real time there's hardly any point, is there.
However, that thing called an ODS does have some business value as I've mentioned here....up to date details for customer service, up to date financial information for over the phone loans, single integrated view of data such that all operational systems can use it, store and forward interfaces between systems in near real time etc.
(Rather than using EAI to always go to the source operational system to get details. (This is hideously expensive to do....ODS is much cheaper, around half the price...))
These things are all 'customer' focused or 'cost cutting' focused both of which can contribute to the profitability of the company.
My 2cents worth.....
Best Regards

I may be a little dense, or maybe it is the type of clients I have.
Either way, can we discuss the >>Real<< value of real-time DW? I am
obviously missing the value proposition here. I have found that
business people make very few decisions/actions on information on an
up-to-the-minute set of information. End-of-Day information, yes. But
would a manager take an action on information based on the dash board gauge having moved from green to yellow in the last 10 minutes, OR would
they wait and see what the situation was at EOD?
Thanks!
